History & Culture of Ganado

Ganado, on the Navajo Reservation west of Window Rock, was named in 1876 for Ganado Mucho, a Navajo peace chief during the wars of the 1850s and 1860s between his tribe and the United States. He was a rancher, and his name, translated to English meant Many Cattle, was given to him when Mexico still claimed Arizona.

Ganado is home to the Hubbell Trading Post, the oldest continuously operated trading post on the Navajo Reservation. The trading post was originally purchased by John Lorenzo Hubbell in 1878. The Hubbell family operated the trading post until it was sold in 1967 to the National Park Service. The trading post is still in operation by a non-profit organization that maintains the traditions that the Hubbell family established. The site consists of the original 160-acre homestead, which has the trading post, family home, and visitor center as the primary attractions.
